Why Now is the Ideal Time for a Personal Color Analysis

Writer: Miss LyssMiss Lyss

Planning a wedding is an exciting time filled with choices—venue, dress, flowers, décor—but have you considered the power of color in making you look and feel your best? A personal color analysis is a game-changer for engaged couples who want to look radiant not just on their wedding day but throughout their entire engagement season and beyond.

What Is a Personal Color Analysis?

A personal color analysis is a process that determines which colors best complement your natural skin tone, hair, and eye color. Based on factors like undertones, contrast, and depth, a trained consultant will categorize you into a seasonal palette—Spring, Summer, Autumn, or Winter—each with a range of shades that enhance your natural glow. Wearing the right colors can make your skin appear more luminous, your eyes brighter, and your overall appearance more harmonious.

So why is now, during your engagement, the perfect time to discover your best colors? Here are three reasons:

1. So Many Events, So Many Outfits

Your engagement isn’t just about the wedding day—it’s a season filled with special events:

  • Engagement photos

  • Bridal shower

  • Bachelorette party

  • Rehearsal dinner

  • The big day itself

Each of these occasions presents an opportunity to look and feel your best. Knowing your ideal color palette will make shopping for outfits easier and ensure you always look effortlessly radiant in photos and in person.

2. The Start of a New Chapter

Your engagement marks the beginning of a new phase in life. It’s the perfect time to refine your personal style and embrace a look that feels authentically you. A color analysis can guide your wardrobe choices beyond the wedding, helping you curate a closet that enhances your natural beauty and boosts your confidence.

3. Find Your Ideal Wedding Colors

The right color palette doesn’t just apply to your wardrobe—it can influence your wedding day look! From selecting the perfect shade of white for your dress to choosing the most flattering makeup and bridesmaid colors, knowing your best hues ensures you shine on your big day. You can even apply your palette to your event decor and invitations. Plus, you’ll feel confident knowing your wedding aesthetic complements your natural beauty.

A Worthwhile Investment in Confidence

A personal color analysis is an investment that goes beyond the wedding—it’s a lifelong tool for choosing colors that enhance your natural glow. By doing it during your engagement, you’ll ensure you look your absolute best at every milestone event and step into marriage feeling confident and radiant.

The Experience

I personally have been interested in color theory and analysis for years! So when Kate Stoltzfus of My Colors Pop reached out to me, I immediately said yes!

Of course, the social media algorithm knows that I’ve been interested in this, and I’ve been watching plenty of reels of others being analyzed, so I knew what to expect. I was giddy with excitement when I visited Kate and got to meet her super sweet ragdoll kitty, aptly named Cupcake. When two cat lovers get together, you know it’s going to be a blast!

What the appointment looked like:

Kate first sat me down and explained a bit of color theory and verbiage: hue, chroma, and value. She also explained each of the color seasons and the nuances within each (warm/cool/true/neutral). We then made our way to the chair and dressed in a completely neutral gray cape and bonnet that serves almost as a palate cleanser between colors.

With a fresh face, we assessed my natural features: eye and eyebrow color, natural rosyness of cheeks and lips, undertones, overtones, and overall contrast. Then, she worked through some key drapes that represent one of the four seasons to test which direction to head towards. We compared Winter versus Summer, and then Autumn versus Spring.

With each new drape color, we’re evaluating the brightness and neutrality that certain colors reflect onto and bring out in my facial features. What was craziest to me as well was how much brighter my teeth even looked from wearing specific colors! I was just thinking it was time to get them whitened again, but I don’t! I’m sure my enamel will thank me later.

After we identified my specific season (I’m a True/Warm Autumn!) we moved into a makeup analysis. Kate asked for me to bring my makeup bag and we went through my foundation, blush, mascara, eye shadows, and lip colors. I must have known my season because I aced this part! She reviewed each item and shared how the colors I had bring out my natural features, and made some lip color suggestions. Personally, I’m not a big lip color girlie so it was a little of a surprise, but fun to step outside my comfort zone with some of her suggested shades!

Now knowing my color season, Kate had swatches of corresponding makeup colors to enhance one's natural beauty!

As our appointment drew to a close, she gave me some handy pocket resources to use when shopping so I can stay within my color season and what will look good on me. We took some reference pictures and I left so giddy to do some shopping! I swear, I even dreamt of color that night!

Kate followed up with Instagrammers I could follow who matched my season and a personal shopping page of colors and items that would look great on me, along with links to the makeup I had tested out. It was such a fun experience and honestly, I might have to take my husband to her to get his colors tested!

So where does this tie into wedding plans, and how is now the best time to get an analysis done? In truth, there’s never a bad time to do your color analysis. Kate shared that once you do an analysis, you are always that color season, so it never changes. Even as your hair and skin change with age, you will always be you, and your best color palette remains the same..

That said, an ideal time to get your personal color analysis would be before you even get engaged! Think about all the events you’ll have coming up and the photos you’ll be in. One could argue this is going to be your most photographed time of your life, don’t you want to feel confident and glow radiantly in all of them?

Think about how confident you’ll feel walking into a bridal salon to pick the dress knowing what tones look best on you?  Megan Haynes of Shop Color Book showed this great example of different-toned wedding dresses for different seasons.

And think of it this way too, you can make it a group activity! What cooler of a bachelorette experience than to get all your girls a color analysis? Doing mix-and-match dresses for your party? Figure out what tones and colors work best for each of them and how they can coordinate together! The possibilities are endless.
